President Trump Signs Executive Order To Withdraw From TPP And Abortion Funding

On his first Monday in office, President Trump approved executive orders pulling the United States out of a controversial trade deal, suspending the hiring of most government employees, and eliminating payments to foreign abortion providers.

The executive action ending U.S. participation in the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership fulfilled one of Trump’s campaign promises. He claims such trade pacts cost U.S. jobs, an opinion that unions and many progressives share. “Free-trade” Republicans in Congress support the TPP.

“We've been talking about this for a long time,” the president said after signing the order, which he called a “great thing for the American worker.” The comment echoed Trump’s statement in a video he recorded soon after the election. He warned at the time that the TPP was a “potential disaster for our country.”

The president has pledged to negotiate new trade agreements that promote U.S. jobs. According to The Hill, his administration’s representatives in the talks could be Commerce Department secretary nominee Wilbur Ross, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and the White House Trade Council’s Peter Navarro.

Trump also signed orders on Monday that temporarily ended the hiring of non-military federal workers, and stopped the funding of foreign groups that perform abortions.
