President Trump Considers Reopening ‘Black Sites’ And Allowing CIA To Torture Prisoners

President Trump will soon take executive action to re-establish “black-site” prisons, where CIA agents might be allowed to use the “enhanced-interrogation” techniques that many consider torture, according to The New York Times.

The detention centers, created by former President George W. Bush following the 9/11 attacks, reportedly closed during the Obama administration. Trump’s anticipated executive order would not only reopen the facilities, but also call for a review of Obama’s ban on interrogation methods that the Army Field Manual does not condone. In addition, aid workers with the International Red Cross would no longer be permitted to provide assistance to the prisoners, unidentified sources told the Times.

A draft of the order indicates that the president wants to return to Bush’s 2007 policy of protecting CIA interrogators from prosecution for using techniques like waterboarding and sleep deprivation. However, Trump spokesman Sean Spicer said Tuesday that the draft “is not a White House document.” The press secretary told reporters during a briefing: “I’m not sure where it came from or where it originated.”

Officials will consider a rewrite of the field manual, and determine “whether to re-initiate a program of interrogation of high-value alien terrorists to be operated outside the United States,” the draft states, explaining that “legislative proposals” would be needed.

The Hill pointed out that on the campaign trail last year, Trump promised he would bring back waterboarding and “a hell of a lot worse.” He claimed “torture works; (and) if it doesn’t work, they deserve it anyway.”
