President Pushes To Make 'Loyalty Day' A National Holiday On May 1

President Donald Trump has proclaimed that May 1 be observed as 'Loyalty Day', a day that is meant for people to 'recognize and reaffirm our allegiance to the principles' upon which this country was founded. Conservatives are cheering the holiday. Liberals are freaking out because that's what they're supposed to do whenever President Trump does or says anything. The truth is: this is not a big deal.

Loyalty Day has been around since 1921. During the days of the 'red scare', American politicians started it to replace 'International Workers' Day'. Some cities have celebrated it with parades or official ceremonies. Every president has recognized it, every year, since then.

There are those who are overjoyed because they think President Trump took a unique stand for our freedom by founding a new patriotic holiday. The website 'ihavethetruth.com' says it's 'so refreshing to finally have a Commander-in-Chief who loves our country'.

On the flip side, there are those absolutely seething over the idea. The inaptly named website 'bipartisanreport.com' called it 'creepy'. A Twitter user said it sounds like a 'Hitler Holiday'.

Both parties might want to note that former President Barack Obama acknowledged it every year. In his final year in office, his proclamation read, "In order to recognize the American spirit of loyalty and the sacrifices that so many have made for our Nation, the Congress, by Public Law 85-529 as amended, has designated May 1 of each year as "Loyalty Day." On this day, let us reaffirm our allegiance to the United States of America and pay tribute to the heritage of American freedom."

President Bush also recognized it: "Through the spirit and determination of our people, our Nation will prosper and our liberty will be secure," he said in 2008 in his proclamation.

Clinton also proclaimed it a holiday every year, as did George H.W. Bush, as did Ronald Reagan, and so on, all the way back to Eisenhower in 1955. It seems people are looking for any excuse to stay divided these days.
