President Obama Makes Joke About Supreme Court Nominations That Conservatives Call 'Classless'

Yesterday, President Obama addressed the National Governors Association at the White House. Yet, conservatives weren't very happy about a joke he made about the death of Supreme Court justice Antonin Scalia.

Obama said, "Some of you might be in the final year of your last term, working as hard as you can to get as much done as possible for folks that you represent: fixing roads, educating our children, helping people retrain, appointing judges." Obama added a dramatic pause. "The usual stuff." When Obama paused, the room filled with laughter.

When conservatives heard, they called the joke "classless" and "sick." The conservative website Red State said the president's joke showed "zero respect."

The video of the joke seems to add salt to the wound that Obama created by not attending the late justice's funeral on Saturday. Vice President Joe Biden attended the funeral. Obama opted to go to the Supreme Court on Friday to pay his respects. The White House said the decision was partially based on the "potential for the extensive presidential detail to be disruptive."

The president didn't do himself any favors when reporters found out he was golfing on Sunday.

Justice Scalia was the first Italian-American on the Supreme Court, appointed by Ronald Reagan in 1986. Many members of the Italian-American community criticized president Obama for not attending the funeral.

Philip Fogalia, the vice president of the Italian-American museum, said Italian-Americans take paying respects at funerals "very seriously." Fogalia also said, "Justice Scalia was a milestone for the community. The president's absence was disappointing and ill-advised."
