POTUS Had Some Thinking To Do On Cans Of Chicken During Puerto Rico Visit

President Donald Trump touched down in Puerto Rico this week to visit with the victims of Hurricane Maria and get a firsthand look at relief efforts, and the visit seemed to go pretty well. Unless it didn’t. As with most things surrounding the commander-in-chief, it was apparently open to interpretation. According to some circles, the president did a fine job during a well-received visit. By other accounts, it was a visit that came far too late and he wasn’t all that welcome to begin with.

As Uproxx shares, two curious stories have been making the rounds to bolster the case of those that view Trump’s visit as a hot mess. Trump was handing out supplies to a crowd of people, and he jokingly started tossing some things to raised hands. However, there seemed to be some sort of confusion as to what he should do with cans of chicken.

“Trump passed out yellow bags of rice and then started tossing rolls of towels into the crowd as if he were shooting free throws. The crowd laughed and cheered him on,” Death and Taxes reported. “When he contemplated doing the same with the cans of chicken, the crowd gently told him no.”

Alright, so was this a bad thing? We’re going to lean towards no since the crowd seemed to be laughing and playing along, but it has somehow morphed into an implication that Trump is out of touch. Interpretation is a fickle beast. Another row has apparently been created due to a conversation that Trump had with a church member that was handing out water purification kits. The Washington Post picked up the ball to share this earth-shattering news.

“Wait, you put it in dirty water?” Trump asked.

“And then you can drink it after 10 to 12 hours,” the woman replied.

“Would you do it? Would you drink it?” Trump inquired.

“Sure,” she replied.

“Really?” a surprised Trump replied.

“Really,” she confirmed.

Ok, so what do we have with this one? In it’s simplest form, we have some small talk between the President of the United States and a woman that is doing her part to help those victimized by Maria. However, the takeaway for WaPo was that of an out of touch leader that was put off by the fact that someone would consume what he viewed as dirty water. It’s no secret that Trump is a notorious germophobe, so it shouldn’t be all that surprising that he would be taken aback by this.

Could he have tiptoed around that fact a little better? Sure, but we have a sneaking suspicion that the woman in question will not have the memory from her day be the fact that Trump is turned off by dirty things. Instead, we would imagine that she’s pretty happy that the president took the time to talk to her and understand how she’s helping the victims.

Of course, that’s just one way of seeing things.
