Pope Sees ‘Hypocrisy’ In Christians Who Want To Ban Refugees

Pope Francis is criticizing Christians who demand respect for their religion but support President Trump’s efforts to stop refugees from coming to the United States, usuncut.com reported.

The pontiff was referring to the executive action Trump took on Friday, when he signed an order temporarily barring immigrants from seven predominantly Muslim countries. The document also banned Syrians fleeing their nation’s civil war, as well as other international refugees.

The Catholic News Service reported that Francis, during a meeting this week with German Catholics and Lutherans, condemned “the contradiction of those who want to defend Christianity in the West and, on the other hand, are against refugees and other religions.”

The pope explained: “This is not something I’ve read in books, but I see in the newspapers and on television every day. The sickness or, you can say the sin, that Jesus condemns most is hypocrisy, which is precisely what is happening when someone claims to be a Christian but does not live according to the teaching of Christ. You cannot be a Christian without living like a Christian. … It’s hypocrisy to call yourself a Christian and chase away a refugee or someone seeking help, someone who is hungry or thirsty, toss out someone who is in need of my help. If I say I am Christian, but do these things, I’m a hypocrite.”

Francis pointed to the Bible’s Matthew 25, which states: “For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me. I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.”
