Perry Says a Well-Armed Public Could Stop Mass Killings

“Gun-free zones are a bad idea,” according to Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry. He believes properly trained people should be able to carry firearms into movie theaters and other public places, the Daily Mail reported.

The former Texas governor made the comments in a CNN interview on Sunday, in response to last week’s shooting rampage in Louisiana. Rusty Houser allegedly killed two people, as well as himself, and injured 11 others. Authorities said the suspect bought the gun legally, even though he had a history of mental illness.

Perry suggested the outcome might have been different if people in the theater had been armed. He said that would be the case “if we believe in the Second Amendment, and we believe in people's right to protect themselves and defend themselves and their families.”

The candidate added: “I think that you allow the citizens of this country, who have appropriately trained, appropriately backgrounded, know how to handle and use firearms, to carry them. I believe that, with all my heart, that if you have the citizens who are well trained, and particularly in these places that are considered to be gun-free zones, that we can stop that type of activity, or stop it before there's as many people that are impacted as what we saw in Lafayette.”
