Pence: The Media Is ‘Trying To Rig This Election’

Republican vice-presidential nominee Mike Pence indicated Monday he agrees with Donald Trump’s claim that news reporters are conspiring with the Hillary Clinton campaign to make sure Democrats maintain control of the White House.

Pence told the crowd at a rally in the battleground state of Ohio: “I have no doubt the national media is trying to rig this election with their biased coverage in Hillary Clinton’s favor.” Politico noted that it was not the first time the Indiana governor has criticized the mainstream media’s campaign coverage.

Trump has been warning his supporters that the electoral process is illegitimate. On Sunday, he tweeted: “The election is absolutely being rigged by the dishonest and distorted media pushing crooked Hillary — but also at many polling places — SAD. Of course there is large scale voter fraud happening on and before election day. Why do Republican leaders deny what is going on? So naive!”

According to multiple news sources, there have been few cases of such fraud. That did not stop Pence from urging Republicans to be on the lookout for suspicious activity at polling places. “Voter fraud cannot be tolerated by anyone in this nation,” he said, calling on voters to “do all you can do” by “respectfully” monitoring the process.

Politico noted that Trump and Pence are struggling to connect with voters. Their poll numbers have dropped since the release of a 2005 audio recording in which Trump seemed to boast about having committed sexual assault.
