Pence Insists Trump Campaign Did Not Conspire With Russia

Mike Pence on Sunday denied a report that a representative of Donald Trump’s campaign met with a Russian official in Prague last year.

The Daily Mail reported that the vice president-elect was responding to allegations that Trump conspired with Russia to help defeat Hillary Clinton. U.S. intelligence officials have accused Russian leader Vladimir Putin of ordering the cyber attacks on computers used by Democratic National Committee staffers and Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta.

According to Pence, the issue is a mere “distraction” propagated by Democrats who are trying to “delegitimize” the president-elect because they are upset about losing the election. When asked on Fox News Sunday about the purported Prague meeting, Pence replied: “Of course not. Why would there be any contacts between the campaign?”

The story about the meeting came from a dossier prepared by a former British spy, whom unidentified Republican donors reportedly hired to conduct opposition research on Trump. When the real-estate mogul became the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, Clinton’s campaign paid the spy to continue his work, according to The New York Times.

The dossier includes charges that the Russian government has potentially damaging personal and financial information, including a videotape of Trump with prostitutes in a Moscow hotel, that Putin could use to blackmail the new president.
