Paul Ryan: Trump ‘Not My Kind of Conservative’

Republicans should unite behind Donald Trump, even though the billionaire businessman is a “different kind of conservative,” House Speaker Paul Ryan remarked on Monday, as the party’s national convention got under way in Cleveland.

According to The Hill, the Wisconsin Republican acknowledged that he disagrees with the presumptive presidential nominee on a number of issues. However, he urged the GOP to focus on defeating Hillary Clinton and capturing control of the White House.

Trump “is not my kind of conservative, but I come from a different part and wing of the party,” Ryan explained during a lunch meeting The Wall Street Journal hosted in the Ohio city. “I think he is a conservative. There are different kinds of conservatives, that’s for darn sure. We’re a big-tent party. Big tent — real big.”

Ryan withheld his endorsement of Trump until last month when it became clear that the real-estate mogul had earned enough convention delegates to clinch the nomination. According to the Journal, the speaker declared at Monday’s lunch: “What I do know for sure is if we disunify, then we hand the left the country by default for another four years. I just don’t want to be a party to that. I don’t want to be complicit to that.”

Ryan claimed that Trump “does listen” when challenged on his controversial rhetoric and policy proposals. “There are things I take issue with that I want to make sure it’s clear why I do,” the speaker said.
