Paul Ryan Joins Other Republicans In Criticizing Donald Trump

Donald Trump’s derisive comments about Mexico and immigrants from that country are “extremely disrespectful,” according to Rep. Paul Ryan.

The Wisconsin Republican, who chairs the House Ways and Means Committee, said Thursday at an event hosted by Politico that the real-estate magnate “doesn’t speak for the Republican Party.” He added: “I don’t think that’s the way to have an immigration conversation.”

Ryan was referring to Trump’s remarks at his campaign announcement event last month, The Hill reported. The billionaire claimed that Mexico is intentionally sending criminals, including murderers and rapists, into the United States illegally.

Trump has refused to retract the statement, despite intense criticism by Republicans as well as Democrats. On Wednesday, he told NBC News that “there’s nothing to apologize for.” He warned that Hillary Clinton, if she becomes president, will “let everyone come in … killers, criminals, drug dealers.”

The candidate continued: “I have a great relationship with the Mexican people. I have many people working for me — look at the job in Washington — I have many legal immigrants working with me. And many of them come from Mexico. They love me; I love them. And I'll tell you something, if I get the nomination, I'll win the Latino vote.”
