Paul Ryan Agrees to Run For House Speaker

Rep. Paul Ryan will accept the position of House speaker, but only if his fellow Republicans agree to certain conditions, Breitbart News reported.

The Wisconsin lawmaker, who was the GOP vice-presidential nominee in 2012, made the announcement following a Tuesday night meeting with House Republicans.

“We as a conference should unify now and not after a divisive speaker election,” Ryan said, urging the GOP to “move from an opposition party to being a proposition party.” He added: “We have become the problem. If my colleagues entrust me to be the speaker, I want us to become the solution.”

Ryan called on representatives to find common ground, rather than continually criticize Democrats, the president and the news media. “People don’t care about blame, people don’t care about effort. People care about results,” he said, advocating “results-driven, common-sense conservatism.”

Ryan, who chairs the powerful Ways and Means Committee, warned that he will be “happy” to remain in that position if Republicans do not agree to his conditions. “This is not a job I ever wanted and I’ve ever sought,” he said. However, he explained, this is a “dire moment” for Congress.

One of the congressman’s demands is that his work as speaker not cost him time with his family. He gave notice that he would not spend as much time at the Capitol, or on fundraising trips, as previous speakers.
