Paul Accuses President of ‘Bait and Switch’ on Gun Control

Republican White House hopeful Rand Paul is blasting President Obama for advocating more stringent gun-control measures, in response to mass shootings like the recent massacre in San Bernardino, Calif.

“From the very beginning, the president’s been trying to do a bait and switch on the American people,” the Kentucky senator told Newsmax TV. “He wants to make this about his liberal agenda, which is gun control and not about terrorism.”

Newsmax noted that Paul was reacting to Obama’s address on terrorism, in which he pledged to “destroy” ISIS and step up efforts to prevent attacks in the United States. The speech came just a few days after U.S. citizen Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik of Pakistan, reportedly killed 14 people at a party in San Bernardino.

“If we want to know how we could’ve prevented this and how we can protect against future attacks, we need to look at who we’re letting into our country and what are the rules for gaining entry into our country,” Paul said. “I put forward legislation that would say, ‘Look, we just have to put a halt on immigration from the Middle East until we can be more certain that the people who are coming here and the people who are already here are not here to attack us.’”
