Palin Supports Trump Plan to Reject Muslim Immigrants

As other Republicans pile on the criticism of Donald Trump for his proposal to ban Muslim immigration to the United States, Sarah Palin is speaking out in his defense, according to Vanity Fair.

“It was funny how people reacted to candidate Trump’s comments,” the 2008 Republican vice-presidential nominee told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Monday. “The knee-jerk reaction was typical of the media — not you, necessarily.”

Palin called the Republican presidential front-runner’s Muslim ban “common sense,” adding: “I wanted to say, not speaking for Trump, ‘Let him finish the conversation. Let him finish his thought, because we do have a very screwed-up system that is resulting in the bad guys coming on over.”

Vanity Fair reported that only three of the 750,000 refugees admitted to the United States since 9/11 have been charged with terrorist activities. None of them has carried out an attack. President Obama described those fleeing war-torn Syria as mostly “widows and orphans.”

Palin suggested that many people agree with Trump’s proposal, which met with condemnation by politicians ranging from Dick Cheney to Hillary Clinton. House Speaker Paul Ryan called it “un-American” to submit immigrants to a religion test. Others accuse Trump of bigotry or “Islamaphobia.”

When Tapper asked Palin about a possible presidential bid in the future, the former Alaska governor replied that she would not rule out the possibility. She considered running in 2016, but claimed that “a lot of doors shut around me, not of my own volition.”
