Once Again, the TSA Fails in the Fight Against Terrorism

In yet another failure for the Transportation Security Administration, a new report says the agency failed to identify dozens of employees with potential links to terrorism. Released on Monday, the report conveyed that the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Inspector General found TSA didn't identify 73 individuals because the agency lacked access to terrorism-related information from within the government. Even their terrorism indicators were left undetected as those individuals applied for unescorted access to secure airport areas.

Last week, acting Administrator Melvin Carraway was removed from office when findings showed that airport employees failed 67 of 70 tests that let undercover agents sneak fake explosives and weapons through security. The latest report shows that 73 individuals were identified after the National Counterterrorism Center compared more than 900,000 records of active aviation workers with those in its database. In addition, the report said “TSA acknowledged that these individuals were cleared for access to secure airport areas despite representing a potential transportation security threat." The watchdog found that the reason TSA could not identify those individuals is because Social Security numbers are not required, full names were not always entered and there were thousands of files with incomplete or inaccurate employee information.
