Obama's Keystone Veto Left Unopposed

On Wednesday, the US Senate failed to override the veto from President Obama of the bill to approve the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, which has been an extremely controversial topic. This is expected to be just the first of a number of confrontations between the Congress, which is Republican-controlled and the White House regarding energy policy. The vote, which was 62 to 37 included eight Democrats voting along with the 54 Republicans, with a ninth Democrat in favor of the project missing the vote.

The GOP would need to have an additional four Democratic converts in order to override the veto and to send the package on to the House. The Democrats that crossed the party lines included Mark Warner from Virginia, Jon Tester from Montana, Claire McCaskill from Missouri, Joe Manchin from West Virginia, Heidi Heitkamp from North Dakota, Bob Casey from Pennsylvania, Tom Carper from Delaware and Michael Bennet from Colorado. The nonvoting supporter of this override was Joe Donnelly from Indiana.

This same group of nine had joined together, earlier in the year, to provide the Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell the necessary number of votes for passing the bill that was referred to as “S. 1” since it was the first order of business for the Senate in January. The White House has already issued over 12 different veto threats on various pieces of legislation favored by Republicans.
