Obama's First Wall Street Speech Is Fetching A Heavy Ransom, It's Even Double What Hillary Charged

Former President Barack Obama has spent most of the last three months on vacation. After a grueling two terms as president, it seems basking in the sun on pristine beaches at exclusive luxury resorts while penning your memoirs is a great way to help you bounce back. Mr. Obama is home now, and his post-White House plans are starting to come into focus.

The former POTUS has recently made a deal with a Wall Street firm for his first speaking engagement since he returned to civilian life. He'll be raking in a reported $400,000 for that single speech, which is approximately the same amount as his annual salary as president. Not bad for an afternoon's work, but then the Obamas are hardly hurting for cash. Mr. And Mrs. Obama made a joint book deal after leaving the White House for a reported $65 million.

Presidents often command a high speaking engagement fee after stepping down from office. Obama's predecessor, George W. Bush, charges $175,000 per speech. Bill Clinton took in about $200,000 per speech. Like her husband, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton earns about $200,000 on average per speech. That revelation really hurt her as a presidential candidate, especially because she delivered those speeches to Wall Street companies.

Obama once referred to those Wall Street types as 'fat cats', and claimed he wasn't in politics for them. "I did not run for office to be helping out a bunch of fat cat bankers on Wall Street,” he said in 2009. At the time, the country was gripped in a financial crisis, and Wall Street was getting the blame.

Now, it seems, Obama is no longer distancing himself from Wall Street. After all, he doesn’t have to run for office anymore and is no longer under any kind of pressure to keep voters happy. At this point in his career, he can just follow the money.
