Obama's Expanded Refugee Program Draws Fire From GOP

Republicans are lashing out at President Obama for his plan to increase the number of refugees the United States accepts from Syria and other parts of the world.

The Huffington Post reported that on Tuesday, Secretary of State John Kerry proposed the resettlement of as many as 110,000 additional refugees during the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1. That compares with 85,000 in the current fiscal year, and 70,000 during each of the three previous years.

“All countries should do more to help the world’s most vulnerable people,” a State Department official remarked in a written statement. The next president will decide whether to follow through with the proposal. Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton is an enthusiastic supporter of the refugee program, while Republican candidate Donald Trump has warned that terrorists could exploit the process like a “Trojan horse” to gain entry to the country.

Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama argued that “the American people do not support these radical plans, which amount to a complete betrayal from their leaders in Washington.” Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, declared: “We must remain compassionate toward refugees, but we also need to make sure that we use common sense.”

The United States accepted in excess of 100,000 refugees during 10 straight fiscal years, including more than 200,000 in 1980. Since October 2015, about 77,400 people fleeing war-torn nations have found new homes in America.
