Obama Says Trump’s Un-American Policies Create Support for ISIS

President Obama stepped up his criticism of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump over the weekend. In an interview on Face the Nation on Sunday, Obama argued that the continued divisive rhetoric from Donald Trump about Muslims is “ultimately helping do ISIL’s work."

“If we start engaging in the kinds of proposals that we've heard from Mr. Trump or some of his surrogates like Mr. Gingrich, where we start suggesting that we would apply religious tests to who could come in here, that we are screening Muslim Americans differently than we would others, then we are betraying that very thing that makes America exceptional,” Obama explained.

Keep in mind that Trump is constantly haranguing that the US is not doing enough to prevent terrorist attacks, and has even called for a blanket ban on immigrants from countries “compromised by terrorism.” The Donald recently extended the scope of his anti-immigration rhetoric to include recent terrorist victims France and Germany, saying in an interview on Sunday that citizens of those countries should be subject to “extreme vetting.”

Obama’s response to Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric was to highlight American values: “One of the best ways of preventing it is making sure that we don't divide our own country, that we don't succumb to fear, that we don't sacrifice our values and that we send a very strong signal to the world and to every American citizen that we're in this together."
