Obama Says Trump’s Approach To Terrorism Would Make Things Worse

President Obama warned Thursday that Donald Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric about Muslims and his proposals for fighting terrorism would “backfire,” the Guardian reported.

Though he did not mention the Republican presidential nominee’s name, Obama criticized his plans to bar Muslims from entering the United States and bomb “the sh** out of” ISIS. “If we start making bad decisions, indiscriminately killing civilians, instituting offensive religious tests – those kinds of strategies end up backfiring,” the president said.

He continued: “The reason it’s called terrorism as opposed to a standard war is these are weak enemies that can’t match us in conventional power, but what they can do is make us scared. When societies get scared they can react in ways that can undermine the fabric of our societies. They make us weaker; they make us more vulnerable.”

The Guardian noted that Obama has been stepping up his attacks on Trump, especially since the billionaire businessman ridiculed the parents of a Muslim American soldier who died in Iraq while serving in the U.S. military. Regarding whether Trump will receive the intelligence briefings that other major-party nominees get, the president said: “We’re going to follow the law.”

Obama claimed that the struggle to defeat the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria is succeeding. He pointed out that the terror group has failed to recapture areas in the Middle East which the United States and its allies recently seized.
