Obama On Republicans Support Of Putin: ‘Ronald Reagan Would Roll Over In His Grave’

“Ronald Reagan would roll over in his grave” if he heard about a recent national poll indicating that 37 percent of Republicans have a favorable opinion of Russian leader Vladimir Putin, President Obama declared Friday.

During his last news conference of the year, the president pointed out that Putin is a totalitarian ruler who does not recognize democratic principles. “This is a pretty hierarchical operation,” Obama said. “Last time I checked, there’s not a lot of debate and democratic deliberation, particularly when it comes to policies directed at the United States.”

According to Yahoo News, the president did not address the CIA’s allegation that the Russian government attempted to influence the U.S. presidential election by hacking and releasing to WikiLeaks thousands of potentially damaging emails from the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton campaign manager John Podesta. There also have been reports that the Russians, or other cyber attackers supporting Trump, may have hacked voting machines in some battleground states where Clinton lost even though she led in the polls.

“Not much happens in Russia without Vladimir Putin,” Obama said. He suggested that the Russians exploited the “fierceness of partisan battle” during the race for the White House to harm Clinton.

“The Russians can’t change us or significantly weaken us,” Obama told reporters. “They are a smaller country, they are a weaker country, their economy doesn’t produce anything that anyone wants to buy except oil and gas and arms. They don’t innovate. But they can impact us if we lose track of who we are. They can impact us if we abandon our values.”
