Obama Puts Gay Rights Before Religious Freedom

Obama gave a speech at an LGBT fundraiser in New York City on Sunday night sharing the progress his administration has made for gay rights.

He stated “But we also have to say clearly that our religious freedom doesn’t grant us the freedom to deny our fellow Americans their constitutional rights.”

The fundraiser was called an "LGBT Gala" for the Democratic National Committee that was coordinated around Obama's trip to the United Nations Assembly. In addition, he asserted “America has left the leaders of the Republican Party behind."

Obama also made fun of GOP presidential candidate Ben Carson for implying that "prison turns you gay." Obama even indirectly referred to Gov. Mike Huckabee by saying “I’m sure he loves the Constitution — except for Article III. And maybe the Equal Protection Amendment. And 14th Amendment, generally.”

Obama proudly conveyed that he would not back down on his progress for LGBT rights. He added “What makes America special is, is that though sometimes we zig and zag, eventually hope wins out. But it only wins out because folks like you put your shoulder behind the wheel and push it in that direction.”
