Obama Praises Paul Ryan For Getting Budget Passed

President Obama, after signing a budget bill on Friday to avoid a government shutdown, complimented House Speaker Paul Ryan for his leadership in passing the measure.

“He has been professional. He has reached out to tell me what he can do and what he cannot do. I think it’s a good working relationship,” Obama said, according to The Hill. “Kudos to him.”

Many fiscal conservatives are unhappy with the $1.1 trillion budget package because it features large spending increases, including appropriations for Obamacare and the president’s immigration reforms.

Obama also praised former House Speaker John Boehner, who resigned from Congress last month. The Ohio Republican “did a favor to all of us, including now Speaker Ryan,” the president said. “He was able to do that because he was going out the door, and was then given, I think, a little more room to maneuver.”

Regarding his relationship with Ryan, Obama remarked: “We recognize that we disagree on a whole bunch of other stuff, and have fundamentally different visions for where we want the country to go. Perhaps because, even before he was elected, he worked on Capitol Hill, he is respectful of the process and respectful of how legislation works.”

A Republican aide told The Hill that the president called Ryan to congratulate him after Congress approved the budget.
