Obama Claims Americans’ Fear of ISIS Is ‘Over the Top’

President Obama, in his State of the Union address Tuesday night, sought to reassure voters about the terrorism threat and the economy, Fox News reported.

“Over-the-top claims that this is World War III just play into their hands,” he said, referring to ISIS. “(They) do not threaten our national existence.” Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, one of the leading contenders for this year’s Republican presidential nomination, tweeted that the speech was “less a State of the Union and more a state of denial.”

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley agreed with Cruz. She delivered the official GOP response to the speech, stressing that the ISIS threat is real and that Obama has failed to adequately address it. According to some political pundits, Haley is a leading contender for the Republican vice-presidential nomination.

Obama accused his critics of “political hot air” when they say the country’s financial health is deteriorating. “Anyone claiming that America’s economy is in decline is peddling fiction,” he declared, arguing that the United States has “the most durable economy in the world.”

The president also touted the nation’s military strength. “Let me tell you something: The United States of America is the most powerful nation on Earth. Period,” he said. Obama called for “better politics” to replace the partisan squabbling that has created gridlock on Capitol Hill.
