Obama Blasts GOP Senator For Supporting Trump

President Obama has been lashing out at Republican members of Congress who rescinded their endorsements of Donald Trump only after the GOP nominee’s presidential bid began to lose steam.

Obama’s target on Sunday was Nevada Rep. Joe Heck, who initially supported Trump. During a speech at a campaign rally for Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in Las Vegas, Obama told the cheering crowd: “I understand Joe Heck now wishes he never said those things about Donald Trump, but they’re on tape, they’re on the record, and now that Trump’s poll numbers are cratering, he said, ‘‘I’m not supporting him.’ Too late! You don’t get credit for that.”

According to The New York Times, the president was referring to Heck having said he had “high hopes” that Trump would win the election. The congressman reportedly expressed confidence that the real-estate tycoon could be trusted with the nation’s nuclear weapons.

Heck is trying to win the seat being vacated by retiring Democratic Sen. Harry Reid, the Senate minority leader. Catherine Cortez Masto, a former Nevada attorney general, is the Democratic candidate. Republican leaders and strategists who fear their party could lose its majority control of the Senate are watching the race closely.

Obama said that as Trump began to gain traction early in the campaign, Republicans “just stood by and said nothing, and their base actually began to believe this crazy stuff.” The president continued: “Now, when suddenly it’s not working, suddenly that’s a deal breaker. Well, what took you so long? What the heck?”
