Obama Aide: Endorsement Won’t Affect Clinton Email Probe

The FBI will continue to investigate Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server during her tenure as secretary of state, in spite of President Obama’s endorsement of the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, according to an administration spokesman.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters on Thursday that the probe will be “conducted independent of any political interference.” Breitbart News reported that he said the president believes his endorsement will not influence FBI agents who are trying to determine whether any sensitive or classified government information was leaked while Clinton conducted State Department business on the server at her New York home during Obama’s first term in office.

“The reason that the president feels confident that he can go out and make this endorsement, and record a video in which he describes his strong support for Secretary Clinton’s campaign, is that he knows that the people who are conducting the investigation aren’t going to be swayed by any sort of political interference,” Earnest explained, adding that Obama expects the probe to be “guided by the facts” and “follow the evidence where it leads.”

The video featuring the endorsement, which was posted on YouTube and Clinton’s campaign website on Thursday, features a strong message of support by the president for his former Cabinet member. Obama had refrained from indicating his preference during the Democratic primaries and caucuses, as Bernie Sanders mounted a strong challenge by winning in 22 states. The video also contains words of praise for the Vermont senator, with whom the president met at the White House earlier on Thursday.
