Obama Accused Of Election Collusion: 'Worse Than Watergate!'

The Justice Department should scrutinize the Obama administration instead of President Trump’s team for possibly meddling in last year’s election, according to Sen. Rand Paul.

“Time to investigate high ranking Obama government officials who might have colluded to prevent the election of @realDonaldTrump!” the Kentucky Republican tweeted Thursday morning. “This could be WORSE than Watergate!”

Paul suggested during an interview on Fox News that special counsel Robert Mueller’s legal team, which is looking into allegations that the Trump campaign conspired with Russia to interfere in the election, is prejudiced against Trump. He noted that one of the investigators, FBI agent Peter Strzok, was recently forced to step down from the inquiry because of his political leanings. Strzok wrote a text message during the 2016 campaign in which he described the probe as “an insurance policy” that could be used to remove Trump from office if he won the election.

The senator pointed out that the agent also was involved in the FBI’s investigation of the private email server Hillary Clinton used while she was the secretary of state during Obama’s first term in office. The bureau ultimately decided to recommend no charges against Clinton, even though former FBI Director James Comey accused her of having been “extremely careless” with classified government information. Trump fired Comey in May, then admitted on multiple occasions that he did so in an attempt to stop the bureau’s probe of election tampering by Russia.

Paul also implied there is a link between the Justice Department and Fusion GPS, the company that conducted opposition research on Trump during the campaign. Some of the firm’s findings ended up in a controversial dossier that a former British spy compiled. The document exposed Trump’s Russian connections, including his alleged involvement with prostitutes at a Moscow hotel.

Republicans opposed to Trump’s candidacy initially funded the research. Following the GOP National Convention, the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee made the payments to Fusion GPS.

Repeating his tweet, Paul told Fox News: “We’ve had this investigation about Russian collusion; maybe we need an investigation about high-ranking Obama officials colluding to try to prevent Trump from being president. That’s more serious than even Watergate.”

The Washington Examiner reported that Trump, who has called the probe of his campaign’s alleged collusion with Russia a “witch hunt,” has expressed hope that Mueller will soon finish his work. The special counsel recently filed criminal charges against Paul Manafort, a former Trump campaign chairman; and Michael Flynn, who was forced to resign as national security director.

Mueller reportedly is also targeting Attorney General Jeff Sessions, White House adviser and Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner, and others. The president continues to deny there was any collusion.

Paul, a self-described libertarian, was one of Trump’s 16 rivals for the Republican nomination. The lawmaker has clashed with the president on a number of issues, particularly those involving foreign policy.

Paul was one of the initial holdouts on the GOP-sponsored tax-reform measure that Congress approved Wednesday. He finally decided to vote for the bill, which passed the Senate 51-48.
