Obama: ‘Why’d It Take So Long’ For Trump To Lose GOP Support?

Republican leaders should have distanced themselves from Donald Trump a long time ago, President Obama said Tuesday during a speech on behalf of Hillary Clinton in North Carolina.

Obama was reacting to dozens of prominent Republicans having withdrawn their support for Trump since last week’s release of a 2005 audio tape. The real-estate mogul, who was the host of the reality show “The Apprentice” at the time, can be heard in the recording boasting that he had used his “star” status to kiss and grope women.

“Why’d it take so long for some of them to finally walk away?” the president asked. “I mean, we saw this coming. He’s been saying really bad stuff for awhile now. What did you think? He was just gonna transform himself? I mean, I’m 55, it’s hard for me to change. I know at 70 it’s gonna be harder. … Now, I don’t think that’s how the majority of Republicans think, but this is the habit that creates this kind of nominee, and now you find a situation in which the guys says stuff that nobody would find tolerable if they were applying for a job at 7-11.”

According to The Huffington Post, Obama apparently was talking about House Speaker Paul Ryan when he declared: “You can’t have it both ways here. You can’t repeatedly denounce what is said by someone and then say, ‘But I’m still gonna endorse them to be the most powerful person on the planet’ and to put them in charge.”

Ryan has vowed to no longer defend or campaign for Trump, instead focusing on maintaining the GOP’s majority in the House of Representatives.
