North Carolina To Vote On Placing 'In God We Trust' Plaque In State Building

Last month, the U.S. Motto Action Committee put forth a proposal to the North Carolina Davidson County Board of Commissioners to allow the county to inscribe the phrase, ‘In God We Trust,’ onto the exterior of the Ronald Reagan Building in Danbury, North Carolina.

The county commissioners are now planning to vote on the measure. Those in favor of it say that it would convey to the community that they make their decisions based upon long-lasting consequences.

Commissioner Fred McClure, who also serves on the U.S. Motto Action Committee, said at the commissioners meeting on March 23, “You have the opportunity to make a difference here. This is an opportunity for you to set the example morally. We have raised money from churches and individuals who felt it was important to move in this direction."

In addition, there are other counties throughout the country who voted in favor of placing the national motto on government buildings. Last summer, Tennessee’s Roane County Commission approved a measure to place the phrase above the entrances of the county courthouse.

Even after a public debate with county commissioners, the officials were able to put the plaques in place last March. McClure talked about the American Civil Liberties Union saying, “We were told we would get sued and we were and they lost. They appealed it and they lost. They took it to the Supreme Court and the Supreme Court would not hear it. Since then in all the cities and counties where we have been able to do this there has not been one lawsuit."

Lawsuits against the use of the phrase have failed.
