NFL Star Pledges To Donate Entire 2017 Salary To Charity

With all the problems in our world today, one NFL player is not just taking a knee. He's putting his money where his mouth is. He's donating his entire salary for 2017 to educational charities.

Chris Long has a base salary of $1 million for 2017, but with bonuses that are expected to balloon to $2.25 million. Long isn't keeping any of it, though. The Philadelphia Eagle is giving it all up to charities. Specifically, he vows to put the money to educational charities.

Long is the son of NFL Hall of Famer, Howie Long. He has previously donated his first six game checks to scholarships in Charlottesville, Virginia. He's announced that the remaining 10 checks will be going to the educational charity Pledge 10 for Tomorrow.

In March, Long was signed to a two-year $4.5 million contract with the Eagles after winning the Super Bowl with the New England Patriots last season. This included his $500,000 signing bonus. $1.5 million of his contract is guaranteed, but the rest is in bonuses.

In his decade-long career, Long has earned close to $90 million. He's always been generous to charities, but he's giving away everything he earns this year.

"I'm playing the entire 2017 NFL season without collecting income because I believe that education is the best gateway to a better tomorrow for EVERYONE in America," he wrote on the Pledge for 10 website. "I'm encouraging fans, businesses and every person with a desire to join in my pursuit of equal education opportunities for all students to make their own pledge," he continued. "My goal is that through this campaign my donation will be doubled by those inspired to join the effort - because together we can accomplish more."

Because of Long's Pledge for 10 shout-out, the charity has raised an additional $92,000.

"My wife and I have been passionate about education being a gateway for upward mobility and equality," Long said to the Associated Press. "I think we can all agree that equity in education can help affect change that we all want to see in this country."

In total, Long’s foundation is funding four charities, and the one that raises the most this year will get an additional $50,000 bonus.

"There's a lot of opportunities to help out and they're wonderful organizations," Long said. "We have such a great platform as football players and hopefully fans get behind it."

Andrew Whitworth, left tackle for the Los Angeles Rams, has gotten behind it, too. He's pledged $5,000 per paycheck over the next 10 games.

Long has managed to keep a balance in the NFL controversy over the National Anthem. He stands with hand over heart, but he's supported the rights of his teammates to protest police brutality against minorities by taking a knee or holding up a fist. In one photo, Long is standing but has an arm around fellow player Malcolm Jenkins.

"If you don't see why you need allies for people that are fighting for equality right now, I don't think you'll ever see it," Long said. "Malcolm is a leader and I'm here to show support as a white athlete."
