NFL Star Larry Fitzgerald Writes Open Letter Of Support For Ailing Arizona Sen. John McCain

The star receiver for the Arizona Cardinals Larry Fitzgerald wrote an open letter to his friend Senator John McCain, and made the letter public on Christmas day. In the touching and supportive letter, Fitzgerald gave the senator encouragement and prayers as he struggles desperately to stave off brain cancer.

“When I think about Christmas, and I think about Senator McCain, I think of giving,” Fitzgerald remarked in his frank letter, published by Sports Illustrated.

Note that Fitzgerald has been a friend and admirer of the longtime Arizona senator for a number of years.

Also keep in mind that McCain was diagnosed with a primary glioblastoma brain tumor earlier this summer. Cancer experts note the long-term survival rate for that type of tumor is very low.

While Fitzgerald comments in his letter that he is not "a political guy," he goes on to explain he has developed "so much admiration" for McCain as a person over the years of their friendship.

The perennial All-Pro Cardinals wide receiver went on to describe how he took a trip to Vietnam a few years ago and made a point to visit the exact jail cell McCain where was held in as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam for five-and-a-half years.

“The sacrifices John McCain has made for our country, and especially the men and women he served with in the military, are incredible,” the talented and popular NFL star continued. “I saw the very jail cell where he was held as a POW and I tried to imagine what it must have been like to be him."

"I took a photo of myself next to his flight suit, the suit he was wearing when he got shot down. So powerful. So meaningful. Those images will never leave my mind.”

The 81-year-old McCain is recuperating in Arizona after going back home a couple of weeks ago for cancer treatment. That was the reason that McCain did not participate in the Senate’s final vote on the highly unpopular new GOP tax plan.

“Senator John McCain again finds himself in a battle. This time it’s with cancer, and the treatment he’s undergoing is exhausting,” Fitzgerald concluded his thoughtful letter to his friend. “I’ll wish him a Merry Christmas today, and I pray he lives another 20 years.”

Of interest, the future NFL Hall of Famer Fitzgerald was named Co-Walter Payton Man of the Year for the 2016 season together with NY Giants QB Eli Manning. When he was named for the honor, his extensive charitable and community work, especially his own First Down Foundation and the Carol Fitzgerald Memorial Fund (named after his mother who recently died of breast cancer) were highlighted.

Surprisingly, the intentionally insensitive Republican President Donald Trump, who has been feuding with Senator McCain since July 2015 campaign when he quipped “He's a war hero 'cause he was captured. I like people that weren't captured, OK?”, has not stuck his foot in his mouth with any recent criticism of McCain. Note that McCain infuriated Trump by voting against the Republican effort to repeal Obamacare a few months ago.
