Newt Gingrich Highlights Donald Trump's First Trip Abroad As "Historic Turning Point"

To say that it’s been a rough few weeks for President Donald Trump and his administration would be an understatement. The president’s decision to fire FBI Director James Comey sparked a barrage of negative press, and it’s not an overstatement to say that it rattled the staff of the White House pretty severely. Trump’s overseas trip has helped calm the storm at lead a little bit, and at least one observer notes that this may very well spark a turnaround.

As Newsmax shares, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich thinks Trump is knocking it out of the park on his trip, and that should lead to him gaining some semblance of control back.

"The speech was so powerful. I think people will look back on this and say, 'What a historic turning point.' ... He's talking to the leadership of the Sunni world and they're taking it. They're applauding it," Gingrich remarked while speaking with Sean Hannity of Fox News.

Gingrich has also penned an op-ed piece for the Washington Post, and he hit the same notes when he put pen to paper.

"Never before has an American president tried so clearly to unite the civilized world, including the nations of the Middle East and Africa, against the forces of terrorism," Gingrich wrote.

While it was a powerful speech, where it stands in the annals of history is undecided, as well as open for debate. Nonetheless, Gingrich’s point is well taken, as Trump is projecting a message of strength that was sorely lacking during the days of the Obama administration.

"Never before has an American president issued so direct a challenge to those nations to do more in the fight. And never before has an American president so plainly put the ultimate responsibility for eradicating terrorism on the nations of the region," he continued.

Whether or not the trip amounts to a turning point for the Trump administration remains to be seen, but it certainly came at a good time as the storm clouds were swirling pretty ferociously. Perhaps Trump and company have spent some time reflecting on the importance of gaining control of the overall communications strategy emanating from the White House, as a number of those clouds would have dissipated by now with some crystal-clear messaging. We’ll have to wait and see on that as well, but it’s quite clear that something needs to change on that front.
