New Evidence Suggests Murdered DNC Staffer May Have Been Wikileaks Source

This story sounds like it was ripped from the pages of a political thriller, but it’s a real live story that’s both fascinating and frightening. Last year, Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich was shot dead on the streets of the nation’s capital. While the murder was initially presented as a robbery gone awry, that theory quickly confused observers as none of Rich’s possessions had been taken. As AOL shares, speculation continues to mount that there was a bit more than meets the eye in this curious case.

Last July, Rich was shot twice in the back just one block from his home in Washington DC. No leads or suspects have emerged in the murder, and family members were pretty confused as to why none of his possessions were taken if this had been a mugging. The plot thickened just 12 days after his death. Wikileaks started publishing leaked emails from the DNC, and close observers put two and two together to speculate that Rich was the source of the leak.

Private investigator Rod Wheeler was hired by the Rich family to look into things. He claims that he was told by sources in the DC police department that they were ordered to stand down on the investigation into Rich’s death. Wheeler recently spoke with Fox5 DC, and he offered up some more insight into this strange case.

"The police department nor the FBI have been forthcoming. They haven't been cooperating at all,” Wheeler said. “I believe that the answer to solving his death lies on that computer, which I believe is either at the police department or either at the FBI. I have been told both.”

Curiously, the Rich family released a statement after Wheeler’s interview. If they in fact hired Wheeler to look into the case, it doesn’t sound like they were too enthusiastic about doing so.

“We are a family who is committed to facts, not fake evidence that surfaces every few months to fill the void and distract law enforcement and the general public from finding Seth's murderers,” a statement from the family read. “The services of the private investigator who spoke to the press was offered to the Rich family and paid for by a third party, and contractually was barred from speaking to press or anyone outside of law enforcement or the family unless explicitly authorized by the family."

This is an incredibly bizarre case that seems to get stranger by the minute. Perhaps the DC police department can clear up some of the confusion by releasing some details on what they know.
