New CBS Poll Show Donald Trump Supporters Support An Independent Or Third-Party Run

Despite having a double-digit lead in the GOP presidential primary, support behind Donald Trump has not been united. A CBS News poll, released Thursday, shows Trump has 42 percent support among GOP voters. Ted Cruz has 29 percent and Ohio Gov. John Kasich has 18 percent. In a survey last month, Trump had a 20-point advantage over Cruz.

Yet, if Trump loses the party's nomination this summer even though he's leading, 63 percent of his supporters say that he should run as an independent or third-party candidate. Other findings show that if Kasich were to drop out, Trump would lead Cruz 48 percent to 38 presidential. Trump also leads 44 percent among men and 44 percent among women.

When it comes to very conservative voters, Cruz receives 46 percent support to Trump's 40 percent. In terms of unfavorable ratings, Trump is at 63 percent--up six points from last month. In addition, 69 percent of women voters have negative views of Trump. 48 percent have a negative opinion of Cruz and 20 percent look unfavorably on Kasich. The poll's margin of error is plus or minus three percentage points.
