Neil deGrasse Tyson Astonished With The Politicization Of Climate Change

Speaking as part of a lecture series in Sarasota, Florida and at a press conference before it, Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson said that he was "astonished" by Gov. Rick Scott's administration's alleged ban on using the words "climate change."

Tyson also said, “I don’t blame the politicians for a damn thing because we vote for the politicians. I blame the electorate.” A poll, supporting his point, found that Americans, in general, were less concerned about climate change than people in many other parts of the world. Tyson also argued that Florida officials should be preparing for the imminent threat of the sea level rise by stating, “Now we have a time where people are cherry picking science. The science is not political. That’s like repealing gravity because you gained 10 pounds last week.”

In 2010, Gov. Scott (R) said that he had "not been convinced" that climate change was taking place. Earlier this month, a Florida Center for Investigative Reporting quoted several former employees of Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection who said the agency had an unwritten rule prohibiting its staff from speaking publicly about climate change.

Other reports have also come out such as a report from Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility. It said that a state employee was reprimanded for speaking about climate change at an official meeting. Gov. Scott maintains that the claims that his administration forbids its workers from discussing climate change is false. Tyson didn't stop at Gov. Scott though, he also answered questions regarding Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and said, “If you’re going to ignore Earth — and no one else is paying attention to Earth the way NASA is — you could be planting the seeds of your own destruction. It’d be different if most of [NASA’s budget] was spent on Earth, but that's not the case."
