NC Governor Rips Opponents of Anti-Transgender Law

North Carolina’s governor is lashing out at transgender advocates who oppose legislation he signed requiring residents to use public restrooms that correspond to their original sex.

According to Breitbart News, Gov. Pat McCrory told NBC News that one of the groups fighting the new law, the Human Rights Campaign, is more powerful than the National Rifle Association. He said the organization has “millions of dollars, which makes me want overturn Citizens United, because I don’t know who their donors are, either.”

The governor continued: “They are putting on a lot of pressure, instead of having a good dialogue.” Pointing out that companies may establish their own policies, he added: “I don’t think the government should be telling the private sector what their restroom and shower law should be, to allow a man into a woman’s restroom or shower facility at a YMCA, for example.”

A number of corporations, professional-sports officials and entertainers have threatened to remove their operations and cancel events in North Carolina if lawmakers fail to reverse the legislation. Breitbart noted that PayPal executives changed their minds about expanding their facilities in Charlotte, while musicians Ringo Starr and Bruce Springsteen called off scheduled concerts in the state. National Basketball Association officials are suggesting they might move the sport’s all-star game to another location.

Under the law, residents may change their birth certificates to properly reflect their gender identity.
