Muslim Olympian Claims She Was Detained At The Airport - Forgot These Details

Ibtihaj Muhammad made plenty of headlines during the 2016 Rio Olympics, as she was the first US Muslim Olympian to actually compete in a hijab. Her inspiring story gained a ton of traction, and she recently found her way back into the headlines. As the Independent Journal Review reports, that happened when she claimed she was being targeted at US airports due to President Donald Trump’s executive order on immigration - but it turns out that may not be the case.

Muhammad recently sat down for an interview in which the topic of immigration came up, and she shared a personal story that turned some heads.

“Well, I personally was held at Customs for two hours just a few weeks ago. I don't know why. I can't tell you why it happened to me, but I know that I'm Muslim. I have an Arabic name,” she said.

She received a ton of praise for being so open and honest about things, and she took to social media to express her thanks.

“Thanks to all who reached out regarding the December incident at customs. I will continue be a voice for all impacted by profiling & bigotry,” she wrote.

That social media post led to some questions about the accuracy of Muhammad’s story. Trump’s executive order wasn’t handed down until January, so there were plenty of people scratching their heads about what was going on. That led one inquiring mind to reach out to a customs official, and several holes were quickly blown in Muhammad’s story.

“She comes and goes many times. She travels quite extensively. She has never been stopped before. She wasn't targeted. The checks are totally random; random checks that we all might be subject to,” the official said.

That’s pretty different from the picture that Muhammad painted, and that’s incredibly unfortunate. Muhammad had a fantastic opportunity in front of her to be the voice for the US Muslim population, but it’ll be pretty hard to take her seriously if the official’s take on things is accurate.
