More GOP Voters View Trump ‘Unfavorably’

Donald Trump, who recently held a comfortable lead in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, now finds himself in a close battle with Ben Carson and others.

The billionaire’s fall in recent polls puts him at risk of having his worst favorability rating so far in the campaign, according to an analyst for the Gallup Poll. Meanwhile, Carson’s popularity is rising rapidly, Newsmax reported.

Gallup surveyed GOP voters nationwide during the week following the Sept. 16 candidates’ debate. The portion of respondents who viewed Trump favorably was down 32 percent from the previous Gallup survey.

“If that trend continues, it would be his lowest net favorable rating among Republicans since we began tracking his image,” analyst Frank Newport wrote. He noted that Carson’s favorable ratings outpace his unfavorable scores by 63 percent.

The retired neurosurgeon continues to gain on Trump, despite a number of controversial statements. Carson recently came under fire for declaring that a Muslim should not be president of the United States. Though he has no political experience and has never held public office, he has won the backing of many Tea Party members and other conservatives.

The Gallup poll found that another candidate, Jeb Bush, is struggling. The gap between his favorable and unfavorable ratings is just 13 percent. Carly Fiorina has a 38 percent favorability score.
