Monica Lewinsky Shares Thoughts On How To Deal With Bullying As She Reflects On Past

If you pay close attention to the political news cycle, you’ll notice that there’s an overwhelming desire by members of the press to turn even the tiniest innocuous tidbits into a scandal of earth-shattering proportions.

Some of them grow legs, while others quickly fizzle out. Once in a while, gold is struck and there’s no denying the story that’s been put out there. Such a situation happened nearly 20 years ago when former President Bill Clinton was still in office, and it’s one that’s still talked about to this day.

It was revealed that Clinton had an affair with a White House intern by the name of Monica Lewinsky, and all hell broke loose from that point. Clinton was already feeling the heat on a number of other scandals, and the threat of impeachment loomed large.

He would initially deny the allegations in very public fashion, but he was left with no choice but to come clean. Clinton admitted to having an affair with Lewinsky, a woman whose life would never be the same.

As the Daily Mail shares, Lewinsky still feels the effects of the scandal to this day, but she’s managed to work through things and keep her head held high. She was ridiculed ad nauseam, and she even acknowledges that she was one of the first high-profile cases of cyberbullying as the scandal played out.

Lewinsky recently sat down with ITV's This Morning to recount her experience, and the 44-year-old offered up some tips for how to navigate things when you find yourself under attack.

“It's hard for us to imagine in today's world because of the internet, things break within seconds, but from a personal perspective, to have gone to bed as a private person and to awaken the next morning with the world knowing me was shocking,” she said. “There was no one who had gone through an online scandal in the same way, losing a digital reputation overnight.”

At the time of the scandal, Lewinsky was just 24. She was slandered with the most unconscionable adjectives that you could imagine, and it wasn’t subtle. The internet was still relatively new back then, but there were entire online message boards dedicated to ripping her to shreds.

“What's different about being harassed or shamed online is there's no border, it's not at school or if I made a gaffe at a dinner party where it's a contained audience, when it happened online you feel like the whole world is laughing at you,” she continued.

“I couldn't count how many horrible things people online had said about me, but I could count when somebody said something face to face on one hand.”

To her credit, Lewinsky seems to be doing just fine these days. However, one can only imagine the struggles that she’s gone through over the years. Scandals take a very real and personal toll on all involved, and that gets lost in the shuffle as folks deliver up their hot takes and unsolicited opinions on things.
