Mom Of Wounded Vet Blasts Debra Messing For Praising Her Son’s Anthem Protest

In simpler times, not standing for the National Anthem was essentially heresy. Such an action was viewed as disrespectful to the country, the flag, and those tasked with protecting both of them. Those that actually went through with not standing were not looked upon all that kindly, and instances of it actually happening were incredibly rare. Fast forward to today and it’s a completely different story.

Refusing to stand for the anthem is now considered to be a valid form of protest. Exactly what the person that’s refusing to stand is protesting isn’t considered all that important by protest advocates, while those that view the practice as unacceptable remain steadfast in their beliefs. The act of protesting the anthem rose to prominence due to the actions of former NFL player Colin Kaepernick, who decided to refuse to stand for the anthem last season.

Kaepernick’s exact reason for the protests remain unclear, as he has provided a number of varying explanations for what he’s upset about. A number of other players followed his lead, and the protests really gained steam after President Donald Trump called them out as disrespectful. The practice has gradually fallen out of fashion since that point, but a handful of NFL players still engage in the protest on a weekly basis. Off the field, those that support the protests have also carried on the newfound tradition.

As Fox News shares, proud mom Debra Messing was downright gleeful when her 13-year-old son decided that he didn’t want to stand for the anthem prior to an NHL home game for the New York Rangers. Mom and son were in the stands, but Messing was sure to share her son’s decision on social media.

“’Please stand for the Star Spangled Banner.’
Son: ‘Mom, I want to sit down in protest. Can we do that?’
Me: ‘Yes, honey. We can do that.’
“Who’s crying?” she wrote. “I’m not crying. #BLM (Black Lives Matter),” she wrote.

Messing was roundly blasted for the self-aggrandizing post, which has since been deleted. Lisa Smith, the mother of a wounded veteran, is among the many that took umbrage with Messing’s post.

“@DebraMessing: You're proud your son boycotted our Anthem? I'm proud of MY son. You know why? HE can't kneel or walk on his own. HE was wounded fighting for the very freedom that YOU spit on, yet he has NO regrets! He's a Patriot & you're a loser,” she wrote.

Smith’s post gained a head of steam of its own, and she replied to well-wishers with a follow-up post.

“Good morning friends! THANK YOU for all your thoughts & prayers! I have so much to be grateful for! My son,My hero Michael is doing well & will hopefully be home from the hospital on Christmas Eve! (He'll have to go to a physical rehab facility after the holiday),” she wrote.

Critics of the protests continually point out that there are much more effective ways for protesters to get their points across about whatever their grievances may be. Protest advocates counter that argument by pointing to their right to express themselves as they see fit. While that may be the case, it’s certainly ironic that one would be protesting one of the symbols that points to the fact that they have those rights to begin with.
