Mitt Romney: 'Unfit' Roy Moore Should Drop Out Of Senate Race

Mitt Romney has joined a number of other prominent Republicans in calling on Roy Moore, the GOP candidate for U.S. Senate in Alabama, to end his campaign.

“Innocent until proven guilty is for criminal convictions, not elections,” Romney declared Friday morning on Twitter. “I believe Leigh Corfman. Her account is too serious to ignore. Moore is unfit for office and should step aside.” The 2012 Republican presidential nominee was referring to a woman who accused Moore of sexually assaulting her when she was 14 years old.

The Daily Mail, citing reporting by the Washington Post, noted that Corfman is not Moore’s only accuser. Several other women also have come forward with stories about how the former judge allegedly pursued them when they were in their teens and he was in his 30s. Moore continues to deny the charges, insisting they are politically motivated. Until the scandal broke, he was leading the race for the Senate seat vacated by Jeff Sessions when he became the nation’s attorney general earlier this year.

Corfman said her experience with Moore began outside a courtroom, where the then-district attorney asked for her phone number. She recalled that he told her mother he would take care of her while the woman was in court for a custody hearing. Moore later called the number and persuaded the teenager to go to his home, according to Corfman. She said that on another occasion, he removed his clothes, groped her bra and panties, and encouraged her to touch him.

Among the Republicans demanding Moore’s withdrawal from next month’s special election is Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who declared: “I believe the women.” The Kentucky Republican backed the former judge’s opponent, Sen. Luther Strange, in Alabama’s GOP primary. The state’s governor appointed Strange as the replacement for Sessions. Moore had the support of Steve Bannon, Trump’s former chief White House strategist who runs the right-wing Breitbart News.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., proclaimed Thursday that it was time for Moore to “immediately step aside.” Republican Congresswoman Barbara Comstock of Virginia, listing other men who are facing sexual-abuse allegations, said in a written statement: “Harvey Weinstein, Anthony Weiner, Roger Ailes, Roy Moore … No MOORE of this. I believed the stories from the victims of Harvey Weinstein, Roger Ailes and others because they were substantiated and consistent with the stories of how sexual predators operate. To date, Roy Moore has not provided any credible explanation or response to the detailed allegations. The defense from some of his supporters is beyond disturbing. … Roy Moore should not serve in the U.S. Senate.”

Even Donald Trump is suggesting that the candidate should drop out of the race. According to White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the president “believes if allegations are true he will do the right thing and step aside.” The conservative National Review magazine also has called for Moore’s withdrawal.

In a fundraising email to his supporters, the candidate wrote: “The Obama-Clinton machine’s liberal media lapdogs just launched the most vicious and nasty round of attacks against me I’ve EVER had.” He pleaded for donations from “God-fearing Christians like you.” On Friday, Moore released a statement claiming that he has “never provided alcohol to minors and … never engaged in sexual misconduct.”
