Mitch McConnell Urges Vulnerable Senate Republicans To Distance Themselves From Republican Presidential Nominee If Needed

On Sunday Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) suggested that Republican senators facing tough re-election contests may have to determine how to keep a safe distance from the party's presidential nominee.

On CNN's "State of the Union" McConnell said, “Senate races are statewide races. You can craft your own message for your own people. That’s exactly what we intend to do this fall no matter who the nominee is.”

In short, not all Senate Republicans stand behind Donald Trump. CNN's Dana Bash then asked McConnell if he was worried that a Trump nomination would hurt Senate Republicans in the statewide races.

McConnell replied, “We’re going to be running strong with these incumbents no matter who the nominee ultimately is. I intend to support the nominee of our party, and we’ll find out who that is in the coming months.”

Last week, McConnell asked Trump to stop encouraging violence at his rallies.
