Mike Huckabee: 'In Trump, We Have A Churchill'

President Trump is a lot like Winston Churchill, Great Britain’s prime minister during World War II, Mike Huckabee claimed on Tuesday.

According to The Hill, the former Republican governor of Arkansas said the comparison occurred to him while watching a movie about Churchill titled “The Darkest Hour.” Huckabee told his Twitter followers that the film showed “what real leadership looks like,” explaining: “Churchill was hated by his own party, opposition party, and press."

He continued: "Feared by King as reckless, and despised for his bluntness. But unlike Neville Chamberlain, he didn't retreat. We had a Chamberlain for 8 yrs; in @realDonaldTrump we have a Churchill.”

The tweet seemed to suggest that former President Obama was similar to Neville Chamberlain, the prime minister before Churchill who did not prevent German leader Adolf Hitler from conquering Czechoslovakia. Chamberlain’s critics accused him of appeasing the Nazi regime, which allowed Hitler to expand his empire.

During last year’s presidential campaign, Trump expressed his admiration for Churchill and reportedly tried to look more like the former prime minister. On his first day in the White House, he ordered staffers to install a bust of Churchill that had been removed from the Oval Office. The president recently invited members of Congress to join him for a viewing of “The Darkest Hour.”

Huckabee’s tweet met with widespread ridicule in social media. “So glad we have a strong leader who will not back down in the face of our greatest enemies,” Alexandra Erin tweeted.

Victoria Aveyard wrote: “While in the British Army (where he actively sought to serve in war zones), Churchill gave skin from his own chest to help graft an injured officer’s wound. Trump faked bone spurs (to avoid military service).” Brian J. Karem joked: “In @realDonaldTrump we don’t even have an Edsel, much less a Churchill.”

Cliff Schecter mocked the president by tweeting: “This … is so hilarious no response would do it justice. Yes, Huck, Trump is Churchill. Also, your daughter Sarah is Indira Gandhi.”

Jon Stone alleged that “literally every clause of this tweet contains a factual inaccuracy,” while Peter Smith paraphrased a Churchill quote in writing that “we will fight them on the beaches, bone spurs permitting.”

The New York Times noted that Trump differs from Churchill in many ways. The British leader served in his country’s army in World War I, and was known for his eloquent rhetoric as prime minister. Churchill also was a gifted writer who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1953.

“Sure. Churchill served his country 55 years in parliament, 31 years as a minister and 9 as pm,” Norway Parliament member Kristian Tonning Riise tweeted. “He was present in 15 battles and received 14 medals of bravery. … Totally same thing (as Trump).”

Susan Pedersen, who teaches British history at Columbia University, told the Times that Churchill was somewhat similar to Trump in that he was “self-regarding and less inclined to compromise than most successful British politicians,” and “had a hard-right view of British national and imperial interest.” However, she added: “For all his idiosyncrasy, he had real intellectual and political strengths. He was intelligent, literate, well-versed in history, had long experience in government, and knew what he stood for.”
