Mike Huckabee: Leakers Want To "Discredit And Distract Trump From Being President"

The unidentified sources responsible for leaking information about a federal investigation of President Trump and his associates are trying to undermine the administration, according to Mike Huckabee.

“This is as close to a coup d’état as we are going to see without the use of weapons,” the former Arkansas governor and Republican presidential candidate declared on Fox News. “That’s what I believe this is about." He condemned recent “illegal leaks” concerning Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe of alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government to interfere in the 2016 election. “Let’s ask ourselves: Why is it happening? It’s happening to discredit and to completely distract Donald Trump from being president of the United States,” Huckabee said.

On Wednesday, The Washington Post cited unnamed sources in reporting that Mueller had begun investigating Trump for possible obstruction of justice. The president is under scrutiny for admitting he fired FBI Director James Comey in May in an attempt to stop the bureau’s Russian probe. Comey recently testified to the Senate Intelligence Committee that Trump asked him to end an FBI investigation of Michael Flynn, the former Trump campaign adviser who became the administration’s first national security adviser. Flynn was forced to resign in February, amid reports that he had been “compromised” by his Russian connections.

Trump on Thursday posted several defiant messages on Twitter. “They made up a phony collusion with the Russians story, found zero proof, so now they go for obstruction of justice on the phony story. Nice,” the president wrote. He followed up by tweeting: “You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American presidential history, led by some very bad and conflicted people.”

Mediaite reported that Huckabee, a former Fox News host, suggested some of the leaks have come from the White House. Pretending to quote administration officials, he wrote: “Yikes! Robert Mueller called me; wants to talk; don’t know what it’s about, but it will be leaked in NY Slimes or Wash Compost tomorrow.” In another tweet, Huckabee urged Mueller to “find who’s illegally leaking and prosecute them.” He warned: “If he doesn’t, I fear worst - that coziness w/ Comey means witch hunt.” According to Mediaite, the former governor was probably not being entirely serious. He reportedly has a reputation for making jokes on social media.

In an interview with Media Matters, Huckabee claimed that “the reliability today of the mainstream press, particularly The New York Times and the Washington Compost, as I like to call them, is somewhat between an Ouija board and Tokyo Rose.” He explained: “That’s how reliable these anonymous sources are, and that’s what we have to start questioning. Who are these sources? If you can’t name them, maybe you shouldn’t publish the story because you get embarrassed time after time, caught with your pants around your ankles, when it turns out that the stuff that you’re breathlessly putting on the front page is absolutely untrue, and most of it has been.”

Huckabee is an outspoken conservative who has twice sought the party’s presidential nomination. He was governor of Arkansas from 1996 to 2007.
