Michelle Obama Gets Pulled Into Melania Trump-Dr. Seuss Flap

It’s pretty rare when double standards are a good look. We haven’t found one that is, but we have found another of the ugly variety. First Lady Melania Trump found herself in an unexpected flap with a school librarian recently. It seems that Melania donated some books to a school. Rather than being grateful for the kind act, the librarian decided to attempt to portray her gift as a bad thing. As the Daily Mail shares, the librarian essentially scolded the First Lady for donating materials that she construed as being racist in nature.

Since the books were timeless children’s classics from Dr. Seuss, there was a little confusion as to why the librarian felt the need to make such a fuss. However, Cambridgeport Elementary School librarian Liz Phipps Soeiro stepped right up to the plate and dropped an open letter on the subject at hand.

“You may not be aware of this, but Dr Seuss is a bit of a cliché, a tired and worn ambassador for children's literature. Another fact that many people are unaware of is that Dr Seuss's illustrations are steeped in racist propaganda, caricatures, and harmful stereotypes,” the letter read in part.

“Open one of his books (If I Ran a Zoo or And to Think That I Saw it On Mulberry Street, for example), and you'll see the racist mockery in his art.”

Interestingly, neither of the books she deems as offensive were included in the donation from FLOTUS. Users on social media were not kind to the librarian, and they were quick to point out that former First Lady Michelle Obama read Dr. Seuss books to children during her time in the spotlight.

“Dr. Seuss ok when Michelle Obama read it to children but now has racist undertones when our First Lady donates books? Unreal,” wrote one user.

“Barack & Michelle Obama Share 'Racist' Dr Suess Books with Kids. Remember the Outrage?” added another commenter.

“MUST DISAVOW: Michelle Obama spewing racist hate speech to children.... God help us! Liberalism is TRULY a brain disorder,” chimed in another user.

The First Lady has remained above the fray, but Stephanie Grisham, her communications director, shared some thoughts on the matter.

“Mrs Trump intends to use her platform as First Lady to help as many children as she can. She has demonstrated this in both actions and words since her husband took office, and sending books to schools across the country is but one example,” Grisham said. “Turning the gesture of sending young school children books into something divisive is unfortunate, but the First Lady remains committed to her efforts on behalf of children everywhere.”

The school district that employs the librarian didn’t seem all that pleased with her attention grab either, as a statement noted that Phipps Soeiro “was not authorized to accept or reject donated books on behalf of the school or school district.”

“We have counseled the employee on all relevant policies, including the policy against public resources being used for political purposes,” the statement added.

Perhaps Phipps Soeiro will find other outlets to attract the attention she seems to so desperately seek.
