Michelle Obama Is Concerned About Her Legacy - Trump's Undoing Her Work As First Lady

When Donald Trump won the 2016 presidential election, former First Lady Michelle Obama joked that she was going to be in mourning. She even mentioned that she would need a new wardrobe. “I’m going all black for the next couple of years.” She added that she would call it “the black series.”

Well, it's been some time since the Obamas have left the White House and Donald Trump moved in. Happily, Mrs. Obama has not been seen walking around in black - her wardrobe has been quite the opposite, very colorful.

The Obamas have largely remained quiet about the current president and are saving the criticism. Well, at least they're saving most of it.

Michelle Obama is defending some of her own work that the current POTUS has been unraveling. One of Mrs. Obama’s main causes, when her husband Barack Obama was in office, was trying to institute healthier food regulations in school cafeterias across the United States.

With the obesity epidemic in full swing, the former First Lady tried to make schools present children with healthier, more balanced meals options.

Sadly, the program was less than successful. Schools often complained that they were struggling with the budget strains the new food requirements put on them.

The students also complained they did not like the bland new lunch menu. Much of the free and low-cost lunches originally being served were ending up in the garbage.

Because of this, the Trump administration rolled back the healthy school lunch standards that Mrs. Obama implemented, throwing the decision of what to serve to the local school boards.

Michelle Obama isn't letting her work be thrown out without a fight. Instead of criticizing President Trump directly, however, she's appealing directly to parents. Michelle spoke at the Partnership for a Healthier America conference last week and expressed her feelings.

“We gotta make sure we don’t let anybody take us back. This is where you really have to look at motives, you know,” Michelle said.

She continued on: “You have to stop and think, Why don’t you want our kids to have good food at school? What is wrong with you? And why is that a partisan issue? Why would that be political? What is going on?”

“Moms, think about this. I don’t care what state you live in,” the mother of two said. “Take me out of the equation; like me, don’t like me, but think about why someone is O.K. with your kids eating crap. Why would you celebrate that? Why would you sit idly and be O.K. with that? Because here’s the secret: if someone is doing that, they don’t care about your kid.”

Now Mrs. Obama will have to wait and see if her direct plea to parents will translate to schools making healthier changes for their children. However, regardless of parents' desires for healthier foods, it could be the budget that will stop schools from implementing major lunch reform.
