Michelle May Have Been First Lady, But She Wasn't Obama's First Love

Barack and Michelle Obama have always seemed to have a great relationship. They always regard each other with great respect and affection. Their body language always suggests they're very comfortable and supportive of each other. It's hard to imagine the former POTUS with anyone else, but it seems there almost was.

According to the book 'Rising Star' by David J. Garrow, Michell was not the first woman that Barack asked to marry him. Back in his days of being a community organizer, he was pursuing another potential first lady, but it just didn't work out.

Garrow describes a 25-year-old Barack Obama as ruthlessly ambitious with dreams of grandeur. At the time, he was pursuing a woman named Sheila Miyoshii Jager. Things got serious and Obama even proposed to her, but the 23-year-old's mother did not approve of her daughter getting married so young.

The two continued to date for a while, but the relationship ultimately didn't work out. Obama had decided to start a career in politics and he was warned early on that not having a black wife could be a political liability for a black politician.

“I remember very specifically that by 1987, about a year into our relationship, he already had his sights on becoming president,” said Jager, who is of Dutch and Japanese descent.

Jager told Garrow that Obama’s 'resolution of his black identity was directly linked to his decision to pursue a political career'.

At that point, Obama went to Harvard and met Michelle Robinson. He dated both Jager and Michelle for a year, but the relationship with Jager dwindled as his romance with Michelle blossomed. The rest, as they say, was history. His long-time relationship with Jager was swept under the rug; he didn't even mention her in his memoirs, 'Dreams of My Father'.

Jager told Garrow that she ‘always felt bad’ about how things turned out.
