Michael Bloomberg Has An Interesting Prediction For Trump In The Next Presidential Election

Former three-term New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s name was bandied about as a potential independent candidate for president in 2016, but he decided to sit that one out. No word on whether he’ll be dipping his toes into the water in 2020, but he does have some thoughts about what may happen for the next presidential election. As the Independent Journal Review shares, Bloomberg gives President Donald Trump a better-than-average chance of being reelected.

Bloomberg touched on politics and a number of other issues during a recent interview with the New York Times, and he noted that Trump was “a risky, reckless, and radical choice” for President of the United States. Based on those thoughts, it’s no surprise that he supported Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, but he does point out that she was ultimately undone because she lacked a coherent message.

“Hillary said, ‘Vote for me because I’m a woman and the other guy’s bad,’” Bloomberg said.

Politics is a tough business, and messaging is absolutely crucial to ensure that you stay at the top of voters' minds. Just pulling that off is no small feat, as Bloomberg points out that far too many people don’t pay enough attention.

“What percentage of the public would know the name of the vice president of the United States?” he said. “It’s hard to get a message out.”

That’s a fair point from Bloomberg, but there does seem to be some increased awareness these days of things of a political nature. Whether that’s simply a byproduct of a fascinating 2016 election cycle or the tremendous interest in Trump - both positive and negative - is unclear, but voters seem to be much more engaged than normal since Trump took office.

We’ll have to wait and see if that holds true all the way through 2020, but we would expect interest to ramp back up again if there’s any kind of a lull between now and then. Once we get there, Bloomberg thinks Trump has a really good shot at winning again, but he sees that as more of a symptom of dysfunction on the Democratic side.

“They’ll step on each other and re-elect Donald Trump,” Bloomberg said, noting that there’s “a 55 percent chance he gets re-elected.”

If things play out as Bloomberg is saying on the Democratic side, there may also be some real room for a third party candidate next time around. Bloomberg has the means and the profile to attract plenty of interest if he decides to enter the fray, but he would cannibalize some voters from both sides of the aisle. That could lead to an election that’s really too close to call, as well as some potential problems if no clear winner emerges via the Electoral College.

Of course, that would be downright fascinating to watch. There are plenty of voters that reside somewhere in the middle on the political spectrum. For the most part, they end up going with what they perceive as the lesser of two evils. It would be interesting to see how that would play out if a viable third party candidate ever stepped up to the plate.
