Melania Trump's Attorney Speaks Out Against POTUS Border And Immigration Policies

It's no secret that First Lady Melania Trump is an immigrant. The Slovenian beauty is only the second first lady to have been born in another country, and President Donald Trump has held his wife up as the embodiment of the American dream. She came to the U.S. legally, became a legal citizen, and now proudly serves her country as First Lady. Melania's own immigration attorney, however, has broken his silence. He has a bone or two to pick with the president.

Michael Wildes, Melania's lawyer, is highly critical of President Trump's immigration policies. He told Salon this week in an interview that 'if we fix our broken immigration system, not just by building a...screwed-up wall, but we fix the innards of the United States also and we do this in comprehensive fashion...the thesis of which is our homeland is still at risk because of the 11 million people here.'

Wildes says he once agreed with the GOP about denying licenses to illegal foreign nationals because it rewarded lawbreakers. But now he has changed his position and believes that by issuing ID cards to undocumented immigrants it helps keep tabs on practical issues, such as tracking them, and insurance coverage.

Wildes still agrees that 'hardened criminals should not remain in the United States', but he feels Trump's policies target even people who have had minor scuffles with the law. "There is less crime from the immigrant community then there are from the American community...to go into the DUI’s to lower the threshold so that any crime is now a removal offense, is offensive," he explains.

Wildes, a Hillary Clinton supporter and former mayor, has long taken issue with Trump's hard stand on illegal immigration, even as he defended the FLOTUS when she was accused of modeling in the U.S. illegally before becoming a citizen. He feels Americans have a debt to immigrants, even the illegal ones. "How can we turn our backs on these individuals?” he asks. “This is not the way you deal with people's lives.”
