Melania Is Relentless Trying To Look Like A First Lady

When Melania Knauss was dating Donald Trump some 20 years ago, she was interviewed by the New York Times. A journalist asked her if she was ever in the White House, which first lady would she like to emulate? Not surprisingly, Melania answered 'Jackie Kennedy'.

As fate would have it, Melania, now Mrs. Trump, is in the White House, and it was clear in early appearances that she was attempting to channel the American icon Jackie O. On her husband's inauguration day she wore a blue dress with gloves that resembled the outfit Jackie wore to JFK's inauguration. All Melania was missing was the pillbox hat. At the inauguration ball, Melania wore a white gown, as did Jackie.

In a lot of recent photos, however, Melania looks more like she's looking up to Nancy Reagan than Jackie. It's not entirely surprising; fashion magazines are predicting that 80's fashions are starting to make a comeback, and Mrs. Reagan, who was first lady from 1980 through 1988, was always turning heads with her fashionable looks.

Nancy wore red well, and often. It's a power color, and it fit with the bold style of the 80s. Her color came to be known as 'Reagan red'.

Melania has also taken to wearing red. Both Nancy and Melania have stepped out in almost identical red coats. Melania has also donned a red dress on a visit to Palm Beach, Florida with Mr. Trump that is very Nancy-esque.

Just like the current first lady, Nancy also had a penchant for expensive designer clothing, just like Melania. At her husband's second inaugural ball, Nancy's James Galanos gown reportedly cost a whopping $46,000.

Maybe it makes sense that Melania is more like Nancy; her husband is often compared to Ronald Reagan-- both are conservative celebrities-turned-politicians, they were both dismissed as serious candidates, and both are known for being straight talkers.

Nancy Reagan is a fine role model, not just for her fashion sense but for her work as a first lady. Same goes for Jackie O. It’s great that Melania seems to be looking up to these great women, and it’ll be interesting to watch the current FLOTUS settle into her role.
